Summarize a book

Get a one-page summary or chapter-by-chapter notes from a book's own text, and see what each one costs.

Summaries are written from the book's text, read from its EPUB or PDF through Calibre.

Before you start#

  • Calibre's Content Server is on.
  • Model Hub has a provider.

A one-page summary#

  1. Open the book's note.
  2. Select Summarize on the Book tab of the Library panel, or run This book: Summarize (one page).
  3. The summary starts at once. Its row in the panel shows what it is doing, what it has cost so far, and a Cancel button.

A one-page summary of one book usually costs a few cents. A book too long for the model is digested chapter by chapter first, then summarized.

To do a whole shelf, open the shelf and run Shelves: Summarize the books on this shelf. This one shows an estimate first: how many books, about how much text, and the cost. Nothing is spent until you confirm.

Chapter notes#

Choose Write chapter notes from the More menu on the Library panel's Book tab (This book: Write chapter notes). You see an estimate first and confirm. Each chapter gets its own notes. A quote is kept only when it is found word for word in the book.

What to know#

  • A summary of one book starts without an estimate. A shelf's summaries and chapter notes show one first.
  • You can cancel a running summary from its row in the panel.
  • A call billed well above its listed price stops the run.
  • Undo puts an earlier summary back.

An offer on a new book#

The first time you open a book note that has no summary, a banner under the title offers one. Summarize starts the summary at once, and the Library panel shows its progress, its cost and Cancel; Not now closes it for that book; Don't ask again turns the offer off (turn it back on in Settings → Library Hub → Notes → Summaries). The Library panel's Book tab has a Summarize button for any book without a summary. A banner needs Model Hub.
