Edit a selection
Rewrite, shorten, fix, continue, translate or summarize selected text, see the change first, and undo it.
Run a command#
- Select text in a note.
- Run Model Hub: Note chat: Edit selection… from the command palette, or right-click the selection and choose Edit selection with Model Hub…. Then pick one:
- Rewrite… asks how the text should change, such as warmer, less formal. Leave it empty for a clearer version.
- Shorten
- Fix spelling and grammar
- Continue writing. The new text goes right after the selection.
- Translate… Pick a language, or type any other.
- Summarize. The summary goes below the selection's line, or you can copy it.
- Check the change in the review, then select Apply (Insert below for a summary). Select Cancel to leave the note as it is.
Edit selection… shows only when text is selected. To run one of the six with a keyboard shortcut of its own, set one under Settings → Hotkeys: they are still commands there, named after what they do.
The review#
Nothing changes until you apply. The review shows:
- The change: a few words around it, the removed text struck through in red, the added text in green.
- Warnings when a change touches something that's easy to get wrong: a number, a date, a link, or a not.
- The model that answered and what the call cost.
For a rewrite of more than a sentence or two, the model proposes each change separately, so the review lists them one by one. Untick a change to leave it out; the button says how many changes it will apply. If the model's changes don't add up (a change names text that isn't in the selection, two changes overlap, or together they don't give its revision), or the model can't propose changes separately, the review shows one change for the whole selection and says why.
Undo#
After applying, a notice offers Undo, which takes back every change the command made. In the editor, Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z) takes back one change at a time.
If you edited the selected text while the review was open, Apply writes nothing and says Changed since the preview. Run the command again.
Which models#
The commands use three roles, listed under Settings → Model Hub → Roles → Note chat:
| Role | Commands | Default tier |
|---|---|---|
chat.edit | Rewrite, Shorten, Fix spelling and grammar, Continue writing | Balanced |
chat.translate | Translate | Balanced |
chat.summarize | Summarize | Quick |
Move a role to another tier, or give it models of its own, as with any role. See Roles. Each call is in the ledger as Selection: <command>.
What's sent: the selected text and up to 1 500 characters either side of it, as context. The rest of the note is not sent.
