Work with marks
Read a mark, apply it or dismiss it, say why, and choose which kinds show and how.
Before you start#
- A note is open with marks. The local checks mark a note when it opens; the coach marks it when you run Coach this note.
Read a mark#
Each mark is a wavy underline in its kind's color. Hover it, or put the cursor in it and run Show finding, to open its card. The card shows the kind, the quoted words, the suggested change, why, and a Careful: line when the fix would change something like a number, a name or a quote.
The strip at the foot of the note counts the marks by kind, shows which mark you're on and where it came from (for example 3/12 · coach), and says when some findings no longer match the text.
To move between marks, run Go to next finding or Go to previous finding. They wrap around at the ends.
Apply a mark#
- Open the card.
- Select Apply, or press Enter while the card is open. You can also run Apply finding with the cursor in the mark.
The text changes in one step, and the mark goes. Press Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux) to take it back; the mark comes back too.
A mark whose words you edited since it was made turns gray. It won't apply, so a fix never lands in the wrong place. A mark that's only a note, with no suggested change, has no Apply.
To apply everything at once, select Apply all visible in the Findings section of the panel. It's one change, so one undo takes it all back. It skips marks that are out of date, fixes that would change a number or a kept word, and kinds you've hidden, and tells you how many it skipped.
Dismiss a mark#
- Open the card and select Dismiss, or run Dismiss finding.
- The card asks why: Voice, Wrong or Not now. Pick one, or press 1, 2 or 3. Press Enter or select Skip to dismiss without a reason, or Escape to keep the mark.
A dismissed mark stays dismissed. No check marks the same words for the same kind again. Your reasons feed what the plugin learns: see Review what it learned.
To dismiss without being asked, switch off Ask why when dismissing in Settings.
See cuts as an inline diff#
Cuts and Mechanics start as inline diffs: the words to cut are struck in place, and a replacement shows the new words beside the old. Marks that are only notes stay underlines.
To switch a kind between underline and inline diff, select its ⇄ button in the strip, or select Turn inline diff on for that kind in the Findings section of the panel. You can also set it per kind in Settings, under Marks. The card, Apply and Dismiss work the same in both.
Show or hide a kind#
Select a kind's chip in the strip, or select Hide or Show for it in the Findings section of the panel. A hidden kind is still counted, and its chip looks switched off. The same switch is in Settings, under Marks.
Clear a note's marks#
Select Clear findings in the This note section of the panel. The marks go, and stay gone while the findings are unchanged. The next check or coach run brings marks back.
With vim keys#
When Obsidian's vim mode is on, these keys work in normal mode: ]f and [f move between marks, z= opens the card and z= again applies, and zg dismisses. :FeedbackApplyAll applies all visible marks.
