Privacy and costs
What is sent where, what costs money and where your files are kept.
What leaves your machine#
Learning Editor makes no network calls of its own. The local checks, spelling and grammar, your habit rate and the learning from your decisions all run on your device.
| Where | When | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Model Hub, then the provider you set up in it | You run Coach this note | The note's text, your profile, and counts of your habit words in the note. Model Hub sends them to the model provider you chose for the coach's role. |
Nothing is sent at any other time, and nothing else from your vault is sent. Which provider gets the text, and what it does with it, is set in Model Hub: see Model Hub's privacy page, https://insurgently.com/docs/model-hub/privacy-and-costs
Spelling and grammar are checked by Harper, which is bundled with the plugin. Nothing is downloaded when it loads or runs.
Nothing is sent to the plugin's author. There is no telemetry, no account with us and no ads.
What costs money#
- The local checks cost nothing.
- The coach is billed by the model provider you use through Model Hub, for each run. A model on your own computer, through Model Hub, costs nothing per run.
- To cap a run, set Spending limit per run in Settings (US$1 by default). The run also stops after 8 steps. Model Hub's limits per call and per month on the coach's tier apply as well.
- To see what runs cost, open Model Hub's usage view. The status bar shows a run's spend against its limit while it runs.
Learning Editor is free. Its listing is labeled Optional payments because the coach can use a paid model.
Files outside the vault#
Import profile from a file… reads one file you name, which can be anywhere on your computer. It reads it only when you select it, only on desktop, and copies its text into your profile note. Nothing is written outside the vault.
Where things are kept#
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Your profile | Learning Editor/profile.md, or the note you set under Profile note |
| Your dictionary | dictionary.md beside your profile, if you make one |
| Your habit rules | Learning Editor/rules/, or the folder you set under Rules folder |
| Findings | .learning-editor/findings/, one file per note and source |
| Dismissals | .learning-editor/dismissed.json. The newest 5,000 are kept. An unreadable file is kept as dismissed.json.bak and a new list starts. |
| Your decisions | .learning-editor/decisions.jsonl: each apply and dismiss, with its reason and the sentence around it |
| Skipped proposals | .learning-editor/skipped-proposals.json |
| Settings | data.json in the plugin's folder, inside your vault's configuration folder |
| Habit rate | The habit_rate property in a note's frontmatter, only if you turn on Write habit rate to notes or select Write habit rate to this note in the panel |
The files in .learning-editor/ are plain text. Delete the folder to start over.
Changes to your notes#
Your note's text changes only when you apply a mark, and one undo takes each change back. The plugin never changes your profile on its own: it proposes, and you accept. The only other change it can make is the habit_rate property above, which is off by default.
