# The Topic Map panel

> See one collection at a time: what it holds, its topics and what has run on it, with its actions in the header.

The panel shows one collection: what it holds, its topics, and what has run on it. Open it from the ribbon (the dashboard icon), with **Topic Map: Setup: Open the panel**, or from a collection’s dialog in Settings → Topic Map → Collections (**Show in the panel**, which also closes Settings). It follows the collection note you have open. On a topic note it opens that topic; on a family or seed note it opens the Topics tab. The picker at the top switches collections.

The header says how the collection stands (up to date, passages to read, large) and has its actions: **Index…**, **Find topics…**, **Search**, **Draft…**, and under **⋯** Survey, Suggest a split and Preview passages. Each opens the dialog you know, with its dry run first.

**Overview**: under **Size**, three facts, each with what it means: its size on disk (and the disk's free space), the memory it takes while open, and how long Find topics takes here, timed from the collection's own runs once it has some. A warning shows only near a real limit of this computer, and says what to do. Below are its cards by facet, and its cards by document, with the documents that need a look in orange (few cards, a passage that failed, or not split into passages yet).

**Topics**: the families and topics from the last Find topics, largest first. A **loose** topic is one whose cards the naming step found don’t share one subject. Select a topic to see its cards by facet, the documents it draws on, claims inside it that disagree (from different documents, with opposite positions), and the cards that don’t fit it. Select a disagreeing claim or a card that doesn’t fit to read its passage. **Open map** (on the list and on a topic) opens the [topic map](map.md), on that topic when you are in one. **‹ Back to topics** returns to the list; **Open topic note** opens the note (with one note per family, **Open in family note** opens the family’s note at the topic’s section) and **Local graph** its local graph.

![Runs](img/panel-runs.png)

**Groups**: the terms several passages or books repeat, biggest first, with a filter by name. Select one to see its versions, each with **Not the same**, and **Join with…**. A topic also lists its key terms. When the groups are out of date the tab offers **Group again**, and an index made before groups offers **Group cards**. See [Repeated terms](repeated-terms.md).

**Runs**: under **Waiting for you**, finished Find topics and Survey runs, with **Review** to open their result again (the most recent ones, until Obsidian restarts); what is running on the collection, with **Cancel**; and what has run, with what it cost and **Undo**. A run that can’t be undone has Undo grayed out, and hovering over it says why.

## Commands

Every command is in Obsidian’s palette under its area: **Collection** (Index, Find topics, Survey, Suggest a split, Preview passages), **Use** (Search, Draft a write-up, Open topic map), **This topic** (Open local graph, Show in the panel; only on a topic, family or seed note), **Lenses** (Check my lenses, Customize this lens) and **Topic Map** (Open the panel, Choose models for each task, Undo a run, Commands…). In the palette each reads like **Topic Map: Collection: Index…**. **Commands…** opens them grouped by area. **Report a problem…** (under Setup in Commands…, and in the panel's ⋯ menu) is not in the palette; see [Troubleshooting](troubleshooting.md#report-a-problem). Right-click a collection note for Index, Find topics, Search, Suggest a split and Open the panel (on that collection); right-click a topic, family or seed note for Open local graph and Show in the panel.
