# The panel

> Every Learning Editor action in one place beside your note, with your habit rate and the coach's last read.

The panel is where Learning Editor keeps almost everything. The command palette lists only eight commands (see [Settings](settings.md)). The rest are buttons in the panel, and the panel follows the note you're on.

## Open it

- Select the **spell-check** icon in the left ribbon, or
- run **Learning Editor: Open the panel**, or
- open a note: on start, it opens beside the first note you open, unless you switch off **Open the panel on start** in [Settings](settings.md). Your note keeps the focus.

The panel opens in the right sidebar. Each section folds shut when you click its header, and the panel remembers which ones.

## What's in it

| Section | What you can do there |
|---|---|
| **Check this note** and **Coach** (the buttons at the top) | Run the local checks (habits and spelling) now, or run the coach on the open note. While the coach runs, **Coach** becomes **Stop coaching**. |
| **This note** | **Clear findings** removes the note's marks until its findings change. **Write habit rate to this note** saves the rate in its frontmatter once. |
| **Findings** | A count for each kind. Hide or show a kind, or switch it between underline and inline diff. **Apply all visible** applies every safe fix as one change. |
| **Progress** | Your habit rate, the habits behind it, the hardest paragraphs and the coach's last read. |
| **Learning** | How many proposals are waiting, and **Review what I’ve learned…** to open them. |
| **Rules and profile** | Which habit rules are switched off, **Copy the starter habit rules**, **Create your profile** and **Import profile from a file…**. |

The "⋯" menu at the top holds **Report a problem…**. It builds a bug report and shows you all of it first. Nothing is sent until you pick how to send it. Learning Editor's part has counts, timings and error codes, never your notes' words, names or paths.

With no note open, the panel says so and shows only the sections that don't need one.

## Your progress

Your **habit rate** is how many habit rule hits there are per 100 words of your prose. It's a count, not a grade. Some of what it counts is your voice, and fewer isn't always better.

### Before you start

- You've selected **Check this note**, so the local checks have run.

### Read it

1. Open a note. The **Progress** section follows it.
2. Read the rate at the top, then the line under it, for example *12 in 480 words. 0.6 fewer than your average of 3.1 over 8 other notes.* The average comes from other notes that have a `habit_rate` property.
3. **Top habits here** shows the habits behind the rate, as bars. **Hardest paragraphs** lists the paragraphs with the longest sentences and highest reading grade.
4. After a coach run, **Coach’s last read** shows the score, the date and the summary.

## Keep the rate in the note

To follow your rate across notes, for example in a Base, the rate can be saved as the `habit_rate` property in a note's frontmatter. Saving it changes the note, so it's off unless you ask:

- **Once:** select **Write habit rate to this note** in the **This note** section.
- **After every check:** switch on **Write habit rate to notes** in [Settings](settings.md).

Only the local checks' own runs write it. A coach run or a dismissal doesn't. The property is written only when the rate changed.
