# Create your profile

> Write down your voice, the words to leave alone and the habits to break, so every check follows them.

Your profile is an ordinary note. The local checks and the coach read it before they mark anything. The plugin never changes it on its own: it proposes changes, and you accept them (see [Review what it learned](review-what-it-learned.md)).

## Steps

1. Select **Create your profile**, from the **Rules and profile** section of [the panel](the-panel.md) or the **Profile** section of [Settings](settings.md). The note `Learning Editor/profile.md` is made from a starter and opens. If you already have one, it opens instead.
2. Fill in its sections:
 - **Voice to keep:** things that are your style, not mistakes, such as fragments used for rhythm. Nothing here is marked. Put words you want left alone in quotes.
 - **Never fix:** things no check may touch.
 - **House conventions:** your own rules. Names and spellings listed after a colon are kept exactly as written.
 - **Habits to coach:** habits you want to see less of. Quoted words are what the checks look for. Delete any that aren't yours.
 - **Rejected suggestions:** suggestions you turned down, and why, so they aren't made again.
3. Save. The next check uses the new profile.

To keep the profile somewhere else, change **Profile note** in [Settings](settings.md).

## Bring in a profile you already have

On desktop, select **Import profile from a file…** in the **Rules and profile** section of the panel and type the path to a Markdown file. It can be anywhere on your computer; `~` means your home folder. If you already have a profile, you're asked **Replace your profile?** first. The file's text becomes your profile note, and a notice counts the habits and rejected suggestions it found.

The plugin reads only that one file, and only then.

## Your own words for spelling

Spelling and grammar leave alone the words in a dictionary note beside your profile: `Learning Editor/dictionary.md` with the default settings. Make the note yourself and put one word on each line. A plain list works. Words and names your profile keeps are left alone too.

## What you get

A profile the checks and the coach follow. Habits under **Habits to coach** become habit rules of their own, with their quoted words.
