# Fix book details

> Look up missing details such as an ISBN, review what was found, and accept only what is right.

Books & Shelves can look up a book's details and propose fixes. Nothing changes in Calibre until you accept it.

## Look up details

- For one book: open its note and run **Books & Shelves: Look up metadata for this book**.
- For every book without an ISBN: select **Look up…** on the **Review** tab, or run **Look up metadata for books without an ISBN**.

For each book it:

1. reads the book's first pages for the title, authors, publisher and year as printed;
2. asks Open Library, and Google Books if you added a key, by the printed ISBN and by title and author;
3. judges each record found against those pages. A record counts as this book only when a quote from it is found in the text.

## What happens to what it finds

- A record the book itself confirms is queued for Calibre.
- So is one a decision model judges plausible with confidence.
- Everything else becomes a row to review, in `Books/Review`.

## Review and apply

1. Open the review notes and accept or reject each row.
2. Select **Apply…** under **Apply accepted reviews**, or run **Apply accepted metadata reviews**. Accepted rows become changes in the write queue.
3. Write them to Calibre: see [Changes to Calibre, and undo](changes-to-calibre.md).

## Duplicate author names

Run **Books & Shelves: Find duplicate author names**. Similar names are judged, and the likely duplicates are sent to review.
