# Find covers

> Give every book note a cover, from Calibre first and from the web when Calibre has none.

## Find covers for all your books

1. Open **Settings → Books & Shelves → Notes** and, under **Covers**, select **Find…**. Or run **Books & Shelves: Find covers for book notes**.
2. Each book note without a cover gets one, saved in `Books/Covers` and linked from the note's `cover` property.

Covers are looked for in this order:

1. Calibre's own cover.
2. Open Library, by ISBN, then by title and author.
3. Google Books, only if you add a **Google Books API key**. Google gives no covers without one. The key is kept in Obsidian's keychain.

You can turn the online lookups off in the same group of settings.

## Where covers show

Under the title of each book note (turn this off with **Show covers in book notes**), on shelf cards and on the reading list.

## Replace a cover

Select the button on the cover in a book note, or run **Books & Shelves: Replace this book's cover**. Choose an image file, paste an image's address, or pick one of the covers found online.

You can replace Calibre's cover too. Calibre's old cover is kept, so undo restores it.

## Send covers back to Calibre

A cover found online can be queued for Calibre when Calibre has none. This is off by default. Queued covers are written like any other change: see [Changes to Calibre, and undo](changes-to-calibre.md).
